The show moves the setting to the present era
Chronology
The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes his living from hit movies for the highest fee. He soon meets a determined British intelligence officer who tracks him down on a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. The novel Day of the Jackal was set in 1963 and involved the assassination attempt on then-French President Charles de Gaulle. Featured Graham Norton favorites: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossoms (2024). Spy/spy/assassin movies have always been my favorite genre of movies – from the earliest James Bond memories to Mission: Impossible and Jason Bourne, to movies like The Marksman, Day of the Jackal (original) and The Jackal, Leon the Professional and the list goes on. This is just another great series in a long list of great shows.
except for one
With Eddie Redmayne at the helm and he’s seriously phenomenal, this show is brilliant. I’ve worked with guns most of my life, I’ve worked with guns my whole life and I personally have firearms licenses – it’s very easy to see that they consulted subject matter experts and military personnel on this show. It definitely creates an authenticity… which is damn nice to see. All the actors seem to fit in perfectly… I first saw Lashana Lynch in the latest James Bond film and honestly I didn’t think her performance was anything special.
But 5 episodes down
In fact I thought she was terrible. Unlike previous female actors of color (if that was the intention) and let’s face it, she fell far short of the exceptional Halle Berry or even the legendary Grace Jones. She felt wooden, flat, uninspiring, frankly, uncredited and talented. But I thought maybe she just got into James Bond and „give her another go“. she just sucks. I don’t know what her job was like before she did it, but she might want to go back to it.
Damn, what about Thandiwe Newton, SHE’S FANTASTIC!!!
I think the casting choice for Lashana Lynch was frankly poor. Personally, Idris Elba would have been a very good choice for the MI6 agent. If you need a British woman of color, Christine Adams is great! So many great choices, and they chose a cardboard cutout. If you can basically ignore the completely hopeless Lashana Lynch, the show is great. Too bad it’s going to be a mini-series and not a multi-season show that would be something special.

I think Eddie Redmayne should seriously consider another spy-style TV show, because he’s a blast to watch and this series would get a 10/10 if it weren’t for Lynch’s terrible casting choices. The new season of „The Silo“ is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
